Descent into a Geological Wonder with an Underground Lake!
The Agioi Theodoroi Cave (doline), located near Sami, is a geological marvel in Kefalonia, formed by the collapse of an ancient massive cavern due to centuries of tectonic activity. The descent into this lush green abyss offers a striking contrast between nature and geology.
After a vertical drop of 20 meters and a steep scree slope filled with rock debris and small trees, adventurers reach the highlight of the cave: a stunning blue-green underground lake with brackish water reaching depths of 88 meters. A siphon lies at the bottom, framed by bright white stalactites and mysterious side chambers.
The cave is surrounded by rainforest-like vegetation with Kermes Oaks and Mastic trees. The vertical cliffs are home to climbing plants and at least seven bat species, such as the Greater Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), and endemic lizards like the Ionian Wall Lizard.
This is an intermediate to advanced caving activity, guided by certified experts and fully equipped with safety gear. You’ll explore not just a cave, but a living laboratory of natural history, biodiversity and hydrogeological complexity.
